Places to Visit in Dooars -Part1

The Dooars or duars are the foothills of the eastern Himalayas range situated in the northeastern part of India. It is the gateway of India to Bhutan. It is divided into the eastern and western Dooars. The Bengal Dooars is called the western Dooars.

The western Dooars region is spread over the three districts of West Bengal, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar. This area is blessed by natural beauty which attracts millions of tourists from all over the world.



A lot of national parks, wildlife sanctuaries are situated here in Dooars. A lot of rivers are streaming through the lap of this region. Some major rivers are Teesta Jaldhaka, Sankosh, Torsa, Murti, and Kaljani.

The places to visit in Dooars are of huge variety. Tourism and export-import business is the main pillar of revenue in Dooars.

Places to visit at Dooars

The three "T" s, that are important in Dooars are tea, timber, and tourism. The places to visit in Dooars are mainly the hill area of north Bengal and Bhutan gateway. The lush green tea gardens, national parks, wildlife like deer, one-horned rhinos, elephants, guars, and leopards are the main attractions of places to visit in Dooars.

1.Jaldapara


Jaldapara national park is situated in the Alipurduar district. It was declared a sanctuary in 1941. The huge grassland, rain forest, and Torsa river make it an ideal place for tourists. It offers a huge variety of flora and faunas.
Jaldapara is known for its Rhino population. Apart from Kaziranga and Pobitara in Assam, Jaldapara is being a safe habitat for this wonderful species.

The Hollong bungalow is the place to stay in Jaldapara. If you do not get confirmation you can stay in the Jaldapara Tourist lodge situated just outside the core area. But do not miss the elephant ride at any cost. It will be a thrilling experience altogether.



2.Gorumara National Park

Gorumara National Park is an important national park of North Bengal. It is one of the best-protected areas for wildlife in India.
The jungle safari is the center of attraction of Gorumara national park. . Elephants, Rhinos, Indian Bison (Gaur), Peacock, Deer are the most common sightings. 
The forest safari is organized in special vehicles meant for the purpose of the forest department. You must book your forest safari from the forest department and take permission to enter.
The entry pass and tickets for the safari can be booked from the counters in Lataguri. Rush in the early morning to get the tickets. This place is a must inclusion in the list of places to visit in dooars.

3.Murti

Do you want to explore the untouched beauty of nature? Murti is still ranked well in this case. The crystal clear water of the Murti river drags the tourist here in Dooars.

The camping, folk dance, serene nature will refresh you. This place is now well equipped for tourists to stay. A lot of tourist huts, resorts, hotels are here to welcome you wholeheartedly.

A place beside river Murti, 60 km away from Jalpaiguri is famous for its scenic beauty. This place is located between Gorumara and Chapramari. It is situated in very close proximity to Lataguri, Chalsa, and Gorumara.

4.Bindu-Jhalong-Jaldhaka

Bindu-Jhalong-Jaldhaka is a trio spot that can be covered in a single day and one of the major attractions of places to visit in dooars. Jhalong is a tiny hill town situated at the bank of the Jaldhaka River. Jhalong and Bindu are near the Indo-Tibetan border. 

The road goes through the Khunia more crossing another famous spot Chapramari towards Jhalong. It has tea gardens and a jungle in its way. The views are no pure and untouched that can't be described.
As the road goes through reserve forest you have huge chances to get close to wild animals.

From Bindu, you can watch the villages of Bhutan. This place is awesome. You can buy some handicrafts from the local shops. Eat momos here, it is so tasty.

How to go to Dooars

Siliguri is well connected with other parts of India by road, air, and train. Bagdogra airport, Njp station is the base station to discover the Dooars.

You can easily hire a cab from NJP station or Bagdogra airport. You can also reach by train to New Mal Jn, Malbazar, Damdim, Gorubathan. Then take taxis or cab on hire to go to these places. Also, explore 7offbeat places of Darjeeling along with these places. 

Where to Stay in Dooars

To visit dooars you can stay in Lataguri or in Malbazar. There are plenty of hotels in both places. You can also book forest bungalows, Govt resorts, or homestays according to your budget and choice.

Carry mosquito coil, umbrella, mosquito repellant while in the jungle, antiseptic lotion and anti-allergy drugs with you when in Dooars.

When to go to Dooars

You can visit Dooars from September 15 up to April. The weather is pleasant in those months. But it is more comfortable in the winter months. All the national parks are closed from June 15 to Sep 15 due to the breeding season of animals. So avoid the months of monsoon.
